The Merion Fire Company of Ardmore and the Ardmore community were recently awarded commendations from the State of Mississippi for their aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Spearheaded by Ardmore’s Fire Chief, Tom Hayden, the project was initiated to supply the depleted Powers Volunteer Fire Company with used gear and equipment. As word spread about the severe conditions in Mississippi, a collection was started that gathered items such as flashlights, manual can openers, food, water and other such supplies. Through the generosity of the Ardmore Firefighters, their Chief, Ardmore Rotary and the community, enough supplies were collected to fill an 18-wheeler which then traveled down to Laurel, Mississippi.
During the Christmas season of 2005 the giving campaign continued by providing the Jones County, MS children with over 1,000 gifts from “Santa”.
On February 9, 2007 the Merion Fire Company of Ardmore and the Ardmore community were awarded two commendations from the Governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour. In Governor Barbour’s letter to the fire company he stated, “I was touched by your willingness and readiness to help our state and its citizens, I am forever grateful for both the equipment and assistance you and the people of Ardmore offered to help our South Mississippi residents, Again, I appreciate your strength, selflessness, and charitable spirit, On behalf of the State of Mississippi and the citizens of Jones County, I thank you”.
